Working for our students, our staff, and the best community in Ohio; Mason!
Ian Orr has lived in Mason for 18 years and is currently the President of the School Board. In the past four years on the school board he has put into action his belief that our school district is the cornerstone of our community because it brings us together and creates opportunities for all of us to learn, grow, and serve. Growing opportunity for each student and staff member while delivering value to our community is central to his work on the MCS Board of Education. Ian shares his Comet Country pride with his wife, Jessica, a resident of Mason for 25 years, and their 4 children — 3 Comet graduates and 1 future Comet graduate.
Ian demonstrates accountability to students, staff, parents, and the community by consistently showing up, listening, and acting on feedback to improve the district. He also believes accountability includes good stewardship of taxpayer dollars. Through his leadership, and the careful planning of those who served before him, the district has been able to build and enhance facilities without taking on additional debt. These accomplishments reflect a commitment to responsible financial management and a focus on meaningful, long-term benefits for students.
Ian values communication with fellow board members and the Mason City Schools community. He plays a key role in ensuring that information is shared in ways that help students, staff, and families make informed decisions aligned with district goals. He actively connects with the community through community converations, one-on-one discussions during challenging times, emails, and phone calls. Ian makes himself consistently available to listen, respond, and build trust with community members beyond board meetings.
Ian believes transparency and honesty are essential to responsible leadership. He puts this belief into action by being accessible to the community, not only to listen, but also to communicate the district’s priorities, progress, and vision. By fostering open dialogue, Ian helps build trust and a shared sense of purpose across the district
Ian believes that public service starts with simply showing up and being present. Over his four years on the Mason City Schools Board of Education, he has demonstrated this commitment beyond consistently attending committee, work, and regular session meetings. He currently serves as President of the School Board, where he leads with integrity, collaboration, and a deep commitment to the success of students, staff, and families. Ian has served, or is currently serving, on several key superintendent committees, including Finance, Student Achievement, Athletics, Business Advisory, and Diversity. These committees are made up of students, staff, parents, and community members, and they play a critical role in shaping and refining district initiatives. .Beyond his work on the board, Ian has a long history of service in the community. He has been a volunteer coach, classroom volunteer, a youth mentor, and a dedicated advocate for children and families. He previously served on the board of a nonprofit committed to ending child abuse, and served as Treasurer of a non-profit focused on mentorship and empowerment for young men. Professionally, Ian brings expertise in Risk Management and Insurance, and he leverages these skills to enhance the district’s value proposition to the community. His approach is collaborative, principled, and future-focused, always aimed at making well-informed decisions that serve the best interests of Mason students. Ian also believes that transparency builds trust. That’s why he prioritizes being accessible to staff, students, and the broader community-listening, engaging, and communicating openly about the work of the board. He is a proud champion of Mason’s incredible students, a strong advocate for our vibrant community, and a committed supporter of our outstanding educators and staff. Ian looks forward to continuing his impact on the school board-serving the best district in Ohio: Mason City Schools.
